Hairless, hr/hr
Two copies of the recessive Hairless
Chromosome: Unknown
RVG description:
At birth hairless rats are normal in weight and size. The hair comes in as in normal rats. About the 19th or 20th day a hairless ring appears around the mouth of the rat. By the 23th day the hair commences to fall out all over the body (see Frontispiece, A and B). In a few more days the rats is completely hairless (Frontispiece, C). IN three or four months the hair starts to come in on the shoulders and back. This coat of hair is thin and the hairs are long and coarse. In about a months this hair comes out and the skin becomes flabby and falls into deep folds around the head, neck and legs, giving the rat a rhinoceros-like appearance.
Not to be confused with the Charles River Hairless which is also designated, hr, in older paper. Charles River Hairless is now designated, fr^cr, to avoid confusion with the original Hairless, hr, which is pictured underneath.
